Winner: Spotlight Award for Inclusivity

Why did you decide to enter Jersey's Best Workplace?
It is important to see what we are doing well and what needs improvement. It’s easy to “think” you know, but confidential data from the workforce is invaluable. We want to include all our employees in taking Randalls forward and ensure that we embrace the richness and experience of every individual within the company.
What was the most valuable thing you learnt from the experience?
Never assume… and communication is key. There are things that we do well and things we need to work on. Clear and concise communication is key to bringing the workforce with us. Throw in transparency and honesty, and we have a winning recipe. By including everyone, the common goal brings continued success to Randalls.
What stood out from the feedback you received? Any surprises?
Our ethos is improving inclusion and communication, and empowering our team. We want staff to talk about Randalls with pride. Our commitment to inclusion is reflected in the results. All staff are able to voice their opinions and question. This drives the business and improves the experience for all – customers and staff.
How do you prioritise diversity and inclusion in your business?
The best person for the job is employed. This is probably a simplistic view, but it’s effective. Our workforce and customers should be included and treated fairly. Diversity brings a richness to customer experience and the wellbeing of all our staff is paramount. Inclusion is different and everyone has a voice. The open-door policy is prevalent through the company. New and fresh ideas are encouraged, with staff encouraged to pass on ideas and to be invested in the business. Completion of projects with staff input has ensured workspaces are efficient and nice places to work. Regular meetings are held to discuss our performance as a company, looking at where we are now and what the future holds. These are invaluable.
Why is this so important to you?
Randalls is a diverse and varied business. We cover lots of aspects within hospitality, property and its management, as well as being a wholesale and retail business. Workers from varying backgrounds ensure our workplaces reflect a modern and ever-developing business, customers and workforce. We have heavily used the excellent visa scheme to recruit from other areas of the world. This has brought a great vibe to our company and outlets.
How has this shaped your business?
The make-up of our staff is key to enable the workforce to thrive and, in return, so will Randalls. We are educated about the world and its diverse population, and we embrace our differences. We have launched three new premises in 2024/25 with confidence. Nomu, Bath Street, is an Asian-twist offering and has enabled us to produce quality and authentic menus, thanks to the diversity of the team employed. Our business is enriched because of this and allows us to bring a different experience to Jersey dining.
Why is it so important to the long-term success of Randalls?
The development of our business based on workforce and family values is reflected and, as a family-owned business, we have the flexibility to ensure that our workforce meets our business needs and requirements. Our workforce has a voice. All experiences in life are relevant, and listening and engaging with all staff will only make us more resilient and prepared for the next challenges we face in these interesting times.
